At Candle & Bell, audio has always been central to our creative identity. We record in our studios at Pride Media Centre in Gateshead, producing original scripted comedy, literary adaptations and factual audio — with a particular focus on comedy and horror.
In 2025 we were awarded the prestigious Radio and Music Indie Fund, recognising our track record and our ambitions for original audio content. Our productions have reached over 200,000 listeners on BBC Sounds, with growth of over 2,000% year on year.

BBC Radio 4 | Series 1 & 2 | Role: Producer
The hit BBC Radio 4 comedy series starring Lauren Pattison, Tom Machell and Julian Clary. Two North East twenty-somethings navigate life, love and the peculiar business of being young in the 2020s — with warmth, wit and genuine heart. Series 1 and 2 have collectively reached over 200,000 listeners on BBC Sounds.
The Witches
Original Podcast | 2022 | Role: Producer
A podcast exploring the dark and forgotten history of the witch trails of 1649 into 1650 when 15 women and 1 man were found guilty of and hung for the crime of witchcraft. Presented by Maria Caruana Galizia and Caitlin Bramwell, featuring academics and experts. Available wherever you get your podcasts!
Gateshead and Proud

Commissioned by Out North East and presented by Jenna Moir, Gateshead and Proud follows events at Gateshead Pride and the Safer to Be Me conference, asking members of the LGBTQ+ community about their experiences living in Gateshead. New ideas come to us from numerous places. Sometimes we adapt books or stage plays for screen, other times we work with writers to develop a short outline into a film or TV show. There isn't one way to approach development - we work to a system that helps writers get the best from the experience and helps to raise early development funding.

We don't accept unsolicited pitches. We often have projects already in development that might be similar to incoming ideas, and the volume of submissions makes it impossible for us to respond to everyone fairly. We work with writers through industry networks, recommendations, and established relationships. If you're a writer looking to connect, the best route is through an agent or through meeting us at industry events.

Yes. We co-produce ideas for TV and film with producers based in the UK and worldwide. If you have a story that could benefit from our expertise in the North East of England, we can help you put together a finance plan and access regional and national funders, as well as the film tax credit.
